Manchuria is composed of three provinces--- Fengtien, Liaoning and Mukden province; Kirin province; and  Heilungkiang or Amur provinve. The total area of Manchuria is never actually determine and estimates vary form 360,000 to 400,000 square miles. This uncertainly as to territorial extent is attributable to the facts that while the international frontiers on the north and east are definitely delimited, the western boundary with inner and outer Mongolia is highly unstable. The Chinese provincial authorities are constantly extending thier jurisdiction as the tied of agricultural settlement penetrates further into pastoral Mongolia. The ethnic afiliations of the Manchus are revealed by the linguistics of their language. Manchu is part of group called the Manchu-Tungus group. This group has vowel harmony which means the vowels are divided into two sets and a word contains only vowels belonging to the same set. The Manchu-Tungus group belongs to the Altaic language family. This family also includes Mongol and Turkish.
